Bridges are a visible example of the nation’s deteriorating infrastructure; thus getting the most attention. As you may know, the San Francisco Bay Bridge is the latest call for attention. It was recently braced because inspections found it structurally unsound. Nonetheless, it started falling apart and was recently closed for further repair. This is emblematic of the attention we have paid to maintenance and repair… and this, as I said, is a visible example. What of the hidden infrastructure that people take for granted? For example, how much of the water restrictions that we now regularly face due to drought are caused by our failure to keep our pipes from leaking? It seems we have been too focused on new development and not focused enough on maintaining what we have and depend on now. What will it take for this to change?
